Toro Tostados


Ingredients for this low calorie, low fat recipe are:


Tostada Corn Shells

Refried Beans + 1 Tablespoon of ground chili powder + 1 teaspoon of ground cumin

Grated or Slice Cheese - we recommend using cheeses containing 70 calories or less per serving

Salsa - or opt for chipolte sauce, as well as different varieties of salsa, hot sauces & picante sauces

Tomatoes, Chopped Raw Baby Spinach (or lettuce), Chopped Onion


Simply spread the tostada with 1/4 cup of refried beans. Top with 1/2 a slice of cheese and pop into the microwave until cheese melts. Top with salsa and salad mix.

Be sure and pile on the salad as it is ultra low in calories. Lettuce contains about 5 calories per cup.

We like to use sliced cheese when making Tostados because it's ultra easy to calculate calories. When using skim mozzarella, 1/2 slice contains a scant 30 calories.

To take the flavor to another level, note that we added some spices. These are totally optional.

Rather than lettuce, we opt for raw baby spinach. Spinach has more health benefits than you can shake a stick at - and 4 cups of this green giant contains a scant 28 calories. If you prefer lettuce - by all means go for it!

The addition of chopped tomatoes provides a healthy dose of the antioxidant lycopene.

If you enjoy sour cream, choosing light sour cream can cut your calories by 1/3. Most regular brands of sour cream contain about 60 calories per serving while light contains about 40 calories per serving. We would not recommend fat free as most varieties that we have recently tested appear to be almost translucent - and resemble a  paste-like consistence.

Another great topper for Toro Tostados are sliced black olives, chopped jalapeno  and sun-dried tomatoes.


Calories: Each Tostada contains about 100 calories each.
